Beating the Autumn Slump: Light, Movement and Mood as the Days Shorten

As the clocks change and days shorten, low mood and flat energy can creep in. Here are practical, gentle ways to protect your wellbeing through autumn.

There is a particular shift that happens around this time of year. The clocks are about to go back, the mornings are darker, the evenings arrive far too early, and many of us feel our energy and mood quietly dip along with the daylight. If autumn leaves you flatter, sleepier and a little lower than the brighter months, you are noticing something real, and there is a lot you can gently do about it.

Why the slump happens

So much of how we feel is tied to light. Daylight helps regulate our internal body clock, our sleep, our energy and our mood-related chemistry. As the days shorten and we spend more time in the dark on both ends, that system gets less of what it needs. For most people this shows up as a mild slump, lower energy, more cravings for stodge, an urge to hibernate. For some it runs deeper into seasonal affective disorder, a recognised form of depression that follows the seasons and deserves proper support.

Understanding that this dip is largely about light, not a personal failing, is the first relief. The second is knowing that light is something you can chase, even in a British autumn.

Get the light you can

Make daylight a priority, especially in the morning. Getting outside early, even on a grey day, helps anchor your body clock and lift your mood, and outdoor light is far brighter than any indoor lighting even when the sky is overcast. A short morning walk is one of the most effective things you can do, combining light, movement and fresh air in one simple act.

Through the day, sit near windows where you can, take breaks outside, and let in as much natural light as possible. For those who struggle significantly through winter, a daylight lamp that mimics natural light can genuinely help, and is worth looking into.

Keep moving, even when you would rather not

The autumn instinct is to curl up and stop, and while rest is lovely, too much stillness deepens the slump. Movement is one of the most reliable mood-lifters we have, releasing the chemistry that genuinely makes you feel better and countering that sluggish, heavy feeling. It need not be intense. A brisk walk, a Pilates session, a gentle flow at home all count. On the days you least feel like moving are often the days it helps most. Promise yourself ten minutes, and let it lift you from there.

Tend to sleep and food

The darker months can scramble sleep, tempting us to oversleep yet still feel tired. Keeping a fairly steady sleep routine, getting morning light and not overdoing daytime napping all help keep your rhythm intact. On food, notice the pull towards heavy, sugary comfort eating, which gives a brief lift and a longer crash. You do not need to deny yourself autumn comfort, just balance it with the nourishing, warming, plant-rich meals that support steady energy rather than spiking it.

Lean into the good of the season

Rather than only bracing against autumn, it helps to find what is genuinely lovely in it. Cosy rituals, warm drinks, candlelight, good books, time with people you like. Building small pleasures into the darker months gives you things to look forward to and softens the season's edges. There is a real comfort to be found in autumn if you meet it on its own terms.

When to reach out

A mild seasonal dip is common and responds well to light, movement, sleep and connection. But if your low mood is persistent, heavy, or interfering with your daily life, please treat that seriously and speak to your GP. Seasonal affective disorder is real and very treatable, and you do not have to push through it alone.

The days are shortening, but your wellbeing does not have to shorten with them. With a little intention around light, movement and the small comforts of the season, you can move through autumn feeling steadier, warmer and more yourself.
